How do I get registration, title, and license plates for a new car in California?

When you purchase a new car from a dealership in California, how do you get the registration, title, and license plates? Does the dealer submit your registration and will you receive the title, license plates, and registration stickers in the mail?

  1. Usually the dealer takes care of it..At least in Texas they do..
  2. Yes, all the info is sent by them to the DMV. They will then send you the paperwork and license plates. You won't get the title though unless you paid cash in full.
  3. If you purchase it from the dealership, it is their responsibility to register the vehicle with your state's DMV and they also should be getting you the plates. Double check with your state, though, as each state is different, but I'm 90% sure that's the case in CA.
  4. In CA, don't you just ask Guvanuh Ahnold?
  5. Yes the dealer submit the info to the DMV, the DMV send your stuff to you in the mail. If your car is financed you will not get the title until it is paid off. The finance company will have possession of the title until the car is paid off
